Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Dr. Puebla recommends lymphatic massage to all postoperative patients. A lymphatic massage is the best way to ease swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgeries such as Liposuction or Abdominoplasty. While this detoxification process can boost immunity at any given time, it’s particularly helpful after these types of surgeries.

What is Lymphatic Massage?

Some patients experience post-surgery accumulation of liquid or tissues beneath the skin that can harden. The resulting fibrosis can cause bruising or soreness. Lymphatic massage is a type of gentle massage that encourages blood flow and lymph drainage to help relieve this fibrosis. Once the lymph is drained, the reabsorption process begins. The waste tissue will be carried back toward the heart and, ultimately, naturally removed from the body. Lymphatic massage is a very safe and effective way to speed the healing process and improve comfort post-surgery.

The lymphatic system flushes fluid through the body to help in the detoxifying process. Post-surgery, your lymphatic system may be damaged or backed up. A certified lymphatic massage therapist can help facilitate the movement of fluid, which will relieve pressure. This allows the lymphatic system to be at the height of effectiveness when a patient needs it most. For most patients, this massage can speed recovery, ease discomfort, help reduce stress and anxiety, and prevent and break up scar tissue. These types of massages have many other benefits, too, including detoxification, pain alleviation, and relaxation. Your immune system will also benefit from these massages, which is crucial during a post-operative time of healing.

Why is it so Important to Get This Specific Type of Massage?

The massage has to be a lymphatic massage to help with the fibrosis. Other massages (particularly deep tissue massages) could actually hurt you as you’re trying to heal, so it is crucial to choose a therapist who has the correct certifications for lymphatic massage. Some people do their own lymphatic massages post-surgery, but this can be very labor intensive. We have a therapist that will come to you. No legwork is needed on your part. Your only job is to rest and heal.
Consider it a custom treatment, as our certified lymphatic massage therapist will target your specific needs to aid in your recovery. These gentle and slow massages usually last about 30 minutes to one hour. Dr. Puebla will advise on how many lymphatic massages will be right for your recovery.

What Should I do After My Lymphatic Massage?

After your lymphatic massage, it is important to drink plenty of water and get up and move around a bit. Most patients feel very relaxed after their massages and might be tempted to lie down, but a bit of movement will increase blood flow and speed up the healing process. You’ll need to follow your doctor’s specific recommendations for exercise and activity.
Have any further questions about the lymphatic massage? Please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to make your post-surgery experience as pleasant as possible.

Revision Policy

Patients who undergo elective surgery can have a revision procedure in the future. No matter which cosmetic procedure you opt for, your body and face will continue to age naturally. If you have excess weight on your body, you may still experience fat deposits that need to be taken care of with additional liposuction treatments. The same goes for wanting a bigger buttocks or hips, extra rounds of treatment may be necessary to achieve your desired result. Aging, sagging, scarring, and other changes are attributed mainly to genetics and your aftercare routine. Should you desire revision surgery one year after your initial procedure, necessary fees may be required for the hospital, surgical facility, lab work, and medical supplies or devices (i.e., breast or facial implants). These revision surgeries will be personalized per patient, and there will always be a discounted rate available for return patients. Only patients who follow the recommended postoperative protocol and attend all follow-up appointments will qualify for the revision policy and associated courtesies.
